New companies are being formed left, right and centre these days, it has never been easier to make your idea a reality. While this is all well and good for those struggling to find suitable work, you can still tell which companies are being run by opportunists, and which are genuine attempts at forming a legitimate business. This article aims to provide you with a few tips on company presentation, tips for beginners, and things to bear in mind for future success.

Choosing a Name

So you have an idea, you have no clue if it’s been done before in some part of the world, but it’s an idea that you like. My very, very first suggestion is that you draw it out on a large piece of blank paper. Make yourself a mind-map with the idea at the centre, then branch off what you will need; materials, staff, legal documents, a name etc. The name of your idea can change; the name of your company should be something solid and memorable.

The reason that company formation is so easy now is thanks to companies like Formations Direct here, who legalize the name and purpose of a new business while offering free advice after-sales. Don’t feel obliged to go for some overly-clever pun: I recently came across a photography company that spent the first two paragraphs of the introduction explaining why their cleverly chosen name was so clever… I soon searched elsewhere.

Document and file everything relevant. Keeping all your documents in one big pile or drawer can lead to important papers being lost or forgotten about which is why online “sorters” like Springpad exist. Keep your documents, contacts, and invoices well organised, and you’ll have a much easier time when it comes to managing staff.

Use the Force

Your workforce is your backbone, nerve centre, blood supply and brain. If you abuse any one of these systems, the rest will feel it. Office atmosphere is the subject of far too many pub conversations, and more often than not it’s something very small that has a large effect on your staff. Don’t become that boss, you know which one, the one that lives in a bubble of ignorance, just wanting the job done. Taking a bit of time (don’t push it though, you’re the boss, not their best mate) to make sure your work force is all on the same page is absolutely pivotal to your company’s success. Advertising on the web is the most effective way of getting your company out there. Time and time again I have seen a good company with a poor website, and it makes ALL the difference. If it doesn’t LOOK professional, why should it BE so? This is the mentality of every consumer behind a screen, so make sure your site looks good, functions well, and has RELEVANT material only.

Most of this is just common sense, but it’s so very easy to forget to think like a person when you’re building a functioning machine. If you take one thing away from this article: be realistic. Forming a company is easy, even nurturing it into something bigger is easy with time, but maintaining that steady increase takes a whole lot of common sense.
